Chapter 12

I woke far before Crow knocked on my door. Far before the false dawn. I had my bath and slipped into new clothes and sat cross-legged on the bed to carry on reading. A knock came as I was scribbling my notes and opening my third book. I gathered my things and went to him.

Crow did not repeat the transportation sorcery from last night, so we walked in silence to the library and did a repeat of the previous day. This time, he did not leave and I kept to my assigned books. Waking early in the room that had become my haven had given me ample time to think before I chivvied myself off the bed and into the bathroom. My last dream before I woke was about Luke and when my eyes opened, they were wet with tears and my heart ached with yearning. I wanted to go back to them and for that to happen; I had to speed through lesson one so we could move on to lesson two. Spells.

Having no idea how much time had passed, it became increasingly difficult to concentrate, as all I could think about was time. I didn't want to ask Crow, and nearly screamed with glee when Raph came to our secluded corner, minus Lady Whiskerbottoms. He greeted me with a smile.

“Good morning Raph. Do you know about what time it is?” I asked.

“Should be about noon. A little after one.” He then added, “It's difficult not being able to tell time. Fallens and demons have no use for it.” He turned towards Crow, and they shared a significant look. Crow rose, towering over Raph.

“I’ll be back,” he said to me with a pointed look. “Stay out of trouble.”

I bristled at the warning in his gaze, however justified it might have been. The events from the previous day had momentarily beaten the urge to wander had been out of me. I had no doubt that it would rear its head, but it'd take a while.

It didn't take long for Crow to return with an hourglass in his hand. He set it on the table and the sand began trickling out from the other end. I glanced at him in pleasant shock and then at the etchings in the glass marking the hour that has passed and went back to my reading.

About two hours in, Crow stopped reading and his eyes closed again. He retained the eerie stillness and I tried not to stare at him, although I couldn't help a peek or two. The book he held was smaller than most around us and looked so familiar, yet I had trouble placing it. The unscathed cover and smooth cream paper indicated it was newer than most everything else in the library. He kept his hands positioned just so I couldn’t read the title, although I knew at least some of the words were in English. Despite his seemingly inattentiveness, every so often he would turn a page before resuming his previous stance.
